Lifeguard Certification at the YMCA of Saginaw

Are you ready to take the plunge into lifesaving? The Saginaw YMCA offers American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, Recertification, and CPR/First Aid/AED training to equip participants with the skills needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in and out of the water.

About the Course:
This course combines online and in-person training to prepare participants for real-world situations. Participants will learn how to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies while providing professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses.

Requirements:

  1. Age: Participants must be at least 15 years old by the final scheduled session.
  2. Prerequisite Swim Test:
    • Proof of identity and age required.
    • Test includes:
      • Endurance swim.
      • Treading water using only legs.
      • Timed retrieval of a 10-pound submerged object and exiting the water without steps or ladders.
  3. Online Coursework: Must be completed before in-person training sessions.

 

Course Details:

  • Format: Blended learning (online + in-person sessions).
  • Duration: 21 hours and 30 minutes of in-person instruction, plus independent online coursework.
  • Certification: Upon successful completion, participants will earn a certificate valid for 2 years, which includes:
    • Lifeguarding or Shallow Water Lifeguarding.
    • CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.

 

To Pass the Course:

  • Complete all online modules in advance.
  • Attend all in-person sessions.
  • Actively participate in activities, drills, and scenarios.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all skills taught.
  • Score at least 80% on the final written exam.
  • Pass the final skill assessments.

For current lifeguards, recertification ensures your skills and knowledge stay sharp. This blended learning course combines online adaptive modules with in-person review and skill assessments.

What’s Included:

  • Review of videos and course content.
  • Pre-assessments to test out of modules or specific learning objectives.
  • In-person skill reviews and final assessments.

Even if you’re not pursuing lifeguard certification, you can still learn lifesaving techniques. This standalone course is available for $75 per individual and provides essential skills for handling emergencies.
