Wanda Washington

After a heart attack and several health challenges, Wanda Washington joined the Y in 2018 through the Silver Sneakers program. Since then, she’s lost weight, improved her blood sugar, and put her diabetes in remission, thanks to classes like Dance Fit. Wanda’s journey is a powerful reminder that making the right choice for your health can transform your life!

My health journey took a major turn back in 2007 when I had a heart attack and a stint was placed in my heart. Soon after, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and arthritis.

Things took another difficult turn in 2013 when I needed a total left hip replacement. Just as I was starting to heal, I was involved in a car accident that caused two blood clots in my heart. The doctors told me that if I hadn’t gone to the hospital when I did, my husband would have lost me.

Six weeks later, the stint placed in 2007 collapsed and became clogged. I was sent to Henry Ford, where they ended up placing six more stints. After the procedure, I was sent home but ended up being flown back by helicopter due to internal bleeding.

In 2018, I enrolled in an insurance program that offered Silver Sneakers, which led me to join the Y. It was the best choice I could’ve made! Since joining, I’ve lost weight, and my blood sugar has dropped so much that my diabetes is now in remission. The Dance Fit class with Chelsea has been incredible, getting me moving and breathing better. These classes are not only fun, but they’ve been key in my transformation to a healthier life.

What I love most is the sense of community at the Y. It’s inspiring to be surrounded by people on their own health journeys. I’m so grateful to be a part of the Y—it’s truly been a game-changer!
