At the Y, swimming is more than just a skill – it’s a gateway to fun, safety, and lifelong confidence. Our swimming lessons are designed to prepare kids of all ages to stay safe and have fun in the water, helping them become strong swimmers and confident individuals.
Each lesson builds on a progressive development model, allowing swimmers to comfortably and consistently master skills before advancing to the next stage. Beyond swimming, our Safety Around Water programs teach essential water safety techniques to reduce the risk of drowning. These lessons combine practical skills with engaging, fun activities to build confidence and competence in and around water.
We offer a variety of options to meet your needs:

As your trusted community partner, the Saginaw YMCA is committed to supporting youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our swimming programs not only promote safety and wellness but also provide opportunities to connect with your community.
Primary Benefits:
The cost for a full 6-week session is $65.00, with a discounted rate of $55.00 for YMCA Full Members. Please note that the registration fee is non-refundable, and participants are expected to attend each week as scheduled. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer make-up lessons if a swimmer misses a class.
In the event of a weather emergency that requires the YMCA to close or cancel a swim lesson, a prorated credit may be applied to the swimmer’s account for future YMCA programs or purchases (credit has no cash value and cannot be refunded).
The progression from Water Discovery (Infant/Toddler) to Stage 1 is based on age. All swimmers must be at least 4 years old before the first class to register for Stage 1 – no exceptions. This policy ensures the safety of all participants in our swimming lessons.
For children under 4, parents are encouraged to enroll them in multiple sessions of Water Discovery. Our instructors will work closely with parents/guardians and their children to continue building essential skills like floating and bobbing.
Please note: A parent or guardian must be in the water with the child for every Water Discovery class, regardless of how many times the class has been taken or the child’s age.
No worries! During the first class, we assess all swimmers to ensure they’re placed in the right level for their skills. This helps us keep everyone safe and ensure they’re in the best spot to succeed. Based on their abilities, swimmers will be assigned to either the shallow pool or deep pool. If a change is needed, we’ll let parents know immediately – right there at poolside!
Always sign up your children for the appropriate lower level or stage based on their individual skills. It’s safer and easier to teach more advanced skills to the stronger swimmer than to have a less experienced swimmer try to keep up with the class. This is a safety measure, and for the well-being of all swimmers, we cannot allow children to move up to a higher level unless they have the necessary skills.
Unfortunately, we do not have waiting lists for any of our sessions or classes. If a class is full, parents or guardians have the following options:
We will not open additional sessions for full classes.
