Swim Team

The Saginaw Family YMCA offers year-round competitive and non-competitive swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. The goal of our teams is to provide every member an opportunity to improve swimming skills and achieve success at his or her level of ability, from novice to international competitor.

Head Coach:  Chet Swanton began his swimming career right here at the YMCA of Saginaw in 1973 at age 5.  He continued swimming for the Sharks for 13 years.  Chet swam for Arthur Hill High School 4 years, finishing 6th int he state in the 500 freestyle his senior year.  He was the school record holder in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle.  In 1986, Chet went on to swim at Oakland University, 4 year letter winner, 1650 GLIAC champion in 1990.  Chet started coaching in 1989.  2 years with OLY (8 and under), in 1991, Chet returned to the Saginaw area to coach the Saginaw YMCA Sharks.  During this time he coached Arthur Hill High School boys for 11 years, as well as Nouvel Catholic Central Girls for 3 years.  The Sharks continually finish in the top 5 in the state and top 10 in the Great Lakes Zones.  The team has been as high as 30 in the nation, with National Qualifiers and 2 Olympic Trial Qualifiers, while Chet has been coach.

All of our coaches, as members of the American Swimming Coaches Association, have access to the most comprehensive training and certification program for youth coaches of any sport in the United States. They provide assurances that the time children spend in swimming will be quality time.
